Diabetes and High Fructose Corn Syrup

Rapid Weight Gain and Obesity using High Fructose Corn Syrup

There have been many studies showing that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) will show a marked increase in weight gain as opposed to other sweeteners.  HFCS mimics fat molecules and so easily goes straight to the fat cells.  Regular sugar does not do this unless the body jumps through a lot of chemical hoops to change it.  Fat molecules are circular and sugar molecules are straight and linear.  So, contrary to what we may think, sugar does not readily convert to fat.  However HFCS will and does.  Our current obesity epidemic began about the same time that HFCS was introduced into our food supply.  A recent study at Princeton University demonstrated that rats that were given HFCS put on fat 300 percent more rapidly than rats fed an equal amount of fruit derived sugar.

Higher Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes with High Fructose Corn Syrup

Over a period of time consuming HFCS will create highly elevated odds of developing type 2 diabetes.  This can easily be avoided by giving up HFCS.  Consuming sodas, bottled teas and junk food is definitely not worth having your toes amputated or going blind.  According to an article in Science Daily, August 23, 2007, researchers have discovered new evidence that sodas and other drinks containing HFCS may promote the onset of diabetes and especially in children.

High Blood Pressure and Higher “Bad” Cholesterol Levels with High Fructose Corn Syrup

HFCS not only puts fat on your body but it puts fat on your heart.  There is a strong correlation between consumption of HFCS and high triglyceride and HDL (bad cholesterol) levels.  Put these together and you have conditions that promote build up of plaque in the arteries.  This can lead to severe heart conditions including high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and death.

Liver Damage and High Fructose Corn Syrup

It is the liver’s job to process everything we eat or drink.  Also the gallbladder and kidneys.  HFCS is especially damaging to the liver.  According to a study conducted by Duke University Medical Center, permanent scarring or fibrosis can occur as a result of consuming HFCS.  This will greatly reduce the ability of the liver to process toxins which can also lead to other bad health consequences. In another study it was found that HFCS leads to fat deposits in the liver.

High Fructose Corn Syrup and Mercury Exposure

Most people are not aware of the risks of exposure to dangerously high levels of mercury in high fructose corn syrup.  In a recent study, mercury was discovered in over fifty percent of the samples that were examined.  Exposure to mercury is especially bad for children and causes irreversible damage to the nervous system and brain. So much of commercial produced foods targeted for children contain large quantities of HFCS.
