Chigger Bite Cures & Natural Home Remedies

Scrubbing

If you think you have been exposed to chiggers like walking in weeds, take a bath as soon as possible.  Scrub the lower half of your body with soap and a good washrag.  If you already have the chigger bites, then keep doing the baths but make a paste with baking soda using water.

Aspirin Chigger Bite Cure

A good chigger bite home cure is aspirin.  Put a couple of aspirins on a saucer and add just a dab of water to make a loose paste.  Put a little of this on each bite.

***

There are many who swear by vitamin E as the best home remedy for chigger bites.  Put Vitamin E directly on the bites and also take it orally.

***

Fingernail Polish

When I get chigger bites I put clear finger nail polish on the bites and I get instant itch relief.

***

Tiger's Balm Chigger Bite Natural Remedy

Get some Tiger’s Balm, the red one not the white one, and put a dab on each bite every few hours to get tremendous relief from itching.  This is the best chigger remedy known to man.

***

Put a wash cloth under the faucet and get it wet.  Then put sea salt on the wash cloth and vigorously rub the salt into the chigger welts until the top gets raw.  It may burn a little but it will make the itching stop.  Then put a menthol ointment on it.

***

To get rid of the awful itching of chigger bites, put a quarter cup of Lysol in your hot bath water.  Soak in this for about 5 minutes.

***

Dab a small amount of clear nail polish on the raised bump as soon as you see it.

***

To get rid of pesky chigger bites, take a paper towel and put some Super Clean engine cleaner on a spot of it and then dab this onto the bites.  Shower to rinse this off.  Don’t get it on your genitals.

***

You can smother the chiggers with Vics Vapor Rub.  The oil based petroleum jelly will suffocate them and the menthol will stop the itching.  Also you can add phenol and camphor and mineral spirits to the mix and it will work wonders for you.

***

You can buy colloidal oatmeal made by Aveeno which is used to provide relief from poison plants like poison ivy and other skin stings and itches like insect bites.  Soaking in oatmeal really stops the itching of chiggers.  If you have only a small number of bites you can make a paste with the colloidal oatmeal and use plastic wrap and tape or ace bandages or whatever works for the size area you need to treat.  Keep the paste on for about 20 minutes and then remove it.  Pat this dry.  It will stop the itching for hours and you can get some good sleep!

I read through some of these chigger home remedies and I tried some of them.  For me the Vics Vapor Rub worked best.  I wanted to see if I could take this to the next level and I tried A & D cream.  I figured that if it worked on the diaper rash of a new baby, it might work for me.  Thus far it has been good!  One could probably try Desitin too but that might be harder to remove.

This may be a little off the wall but it works great for me when it comes to chigger bites.  Immediately when you get a chigger bite get a hand held hair dryer and turn it to the high setting and direct the air onto the bite from a few inches away.  Hold it that way taking it as hot as you can stand it.  When the heat cools down on your skin, the itch will be history!

I live in Texas on a ranch and I wade into a chigger patch several times a year.  I am a chigger magnet and I am especially sensitive to bite.  They are really awful!  I itch day and night with big hard knotted bites all around my ankles and legs.  A friend advised me to go for a hot shower and soap and scrub the area.  Then scratch them until they get raw.  After that put some hairspray on them and it is going to burn.  This stops the itching presto.

***

The most common home remedy for chigger bites is to put nail polish on them but there is little reason to think this could work.  You can’t smother the chigger as it was most likely previously removed by scratching.  The larva of chiggers are what do the bad thing.  They bite into the skin and secret a powerful enzyme that dissolves the surrounding skin cells.  Then they gorge on that.  The larva is full in 4 days time when it leaves the site.  This leaves behind a hard red bump with a white hardened center that produces severe itching.  This horrendous itching can last up to a week.

Hold a lit cigarette tip up to the bite close enough to feel the sting of the heat and the itch will be gone permanently.  This is a quick and effective remedy.

My 5 year old got chigger bites really bad on his front side privates.  I took him right away to the doctor and he advised me to get him some Zantac 75 every twelve hours and Claritin every twenty-four hours.  It really worked well although it is unknown to me how it did it.  The doctor said it had to do with the two in combination.

Bleach Chigger Bite Cure

I moved to Arkanas from Washington and I had never even heard of chiggers.  I got a big batch of them covering my ankles and feet.  It was excruciatingly itchy.  A friend who is from Arkansas all his life advised me to draw some hot water in a big pot or basin big enough to get my feet and ankles in.  Then put in half hot water and half bleach.  After soaking my feet for 10 minutes, the itching stopped completely!  I was desperate for chigger bite relief and I wanted to pass this home remedy on to you.

Ammonia Chigger Bite Home Remedy

Chigger bites are really awful!  My Mom would take a cotton ball and put ammonia on it and then put that on the bites.  I would get relief right away.  The effect is immediate and it’s cheap.

If you really want a good home remedy for chigger bites, try Bordeaux’s Butt Paste.  It works really good for getting rid of the itching and the redness.  One time I had over 100 chiggers on one leg and I thought I was going to lose my mind!  I read on this site about Desitin and since I only use Butt Paste on my daughter’s rashes, I thought what the heck I’ll give it a whirl.  The itching and redness went away almost immediately!

I had literally hundreds of chigger bites all over.  This was out of reach to be affected by the ointments you buy in the drug store.  It was horrendously excruciating!  It was torture!  I tried several other avenues but got no relief.  So I found that getting in a bath as hot as you can tolerate followed by putting Listerine on the bites provided excellent relief!  The Listerine is also an antiseptic so it helped eliminate any infections.  Anyway, I was reborn when the itching stopped.

***

Try a product called Dermoplast.  It is an anesthetic that provides numbing to the skin.  It is not permanent but it is quite a relief.
