Colds in Infants Home Remedies & Natural Remedies

Carom Seeds

If your infant is younger than one year, this is a home remedy that you can use.  Take a cloth and make a ball of carom seeds in the cloth.  Use a rubber band or string to tie it off so the ball is  a little lose.  Put the ball on a hot iron or heat in the microwave and then hold the ball on the baby’s back and chest.  Repeat this cycle when the ball begins to cool.  Make sure the ball is not too hot before putting on your baby.  This is a home remedy that is used in India.

Grind up 8 or 9 pieces of nutmeg.  Remove the shell and grind up only the seed.  The nutmeg should be very fine when ground.  Now take some of the powder and add a little water to make a paste and put this on your baby’s back, chest and head.  This will pull the congestion from your baby’s chest. This is a very good natural remedy for an infant with a cold.

With your baby laying on its back, massage the chest smoothly and softly.  Then put your baby on its chest and massage the back up and down the spine but pushing more deeply into the muscles.  Again don’t be too rough.  This will help relieve cold congestion in an infant.

Tulsi Tea Infant Colds Home Remedy

There is a great home remedy for infants that have a cold.  Get a clump of fresh tulsi (basil) leaves.  Wash them and then boil them in about a quart of water.  Boil it until only a cup is left.  Add to this the fresh juice from one half of a lemon.  Stir it in and let it come to room temperature in a sealed jar.  Give your child or infant 3 or 4 teaspoons every morning and every night.  Tulsi (holy basil or basil) is a very powerful and commonly used herb in India and other parts of the world.

To treat a cold in babies and children, make a bath that is hot and steaming and put in several drops of eucalyptus oil and a half cup (or more) of dried lavender.  Then you sit in the tub and hold your child so that he or she can breathe the healing vapors that rise up with the steam.  Avoid having your infant or child put their feet or hands or other body parts into the hot water so as not to cause discomfort.  These vapors will open the sinuses and relieve chest congestion.

Make a paste from fresh ginger juice, fresh basil leaves and honey.  This is very efficient at helping with a cold in your infant or child.  For an infant you can put a fourth teaspoon in a little milk or other liquid that he or she will drink.  This loosens mucous and helps to cure the cough from the inside.  Make vegetable broth and give it while still warm.  Put several cloves onto a skillet and bring them to the point they start to burn and turn the color white.  Encourage your children to breathe the vapors.  This is excellent for correcting a condition of too much phlegm.

The common infant cold is a viral infection in the head, throat and chest.  This is very common in children because their immune systems are not yet functioning at the same efficiency as an adult.  Avoid all dairy products as they make a cold worse.  They are mucous forming.  Any soup with garlic added is effective because the garlic is anti-microbial.  Put two cups of water in a pan and several ounces of ginger and boil it down to one cup and give this as it is very good at relieving respiratory tract infection.  Also have your child inhale the ginger vapor.  A little turmeric powder can be added to this or anything else.  Turmeric is also very good and relieving infection and inflammation.

Eucalyptus Oil Natural Home Remedy for Infant's Cold

Put a few drops of eucalyptus oil (true essential oil not synthetic fragrance) in a few tablespoons of olive oil and rub this on your infant’s chest, back and throat to help relieve a cold.  You can put a few drops on the pillow so that your infant can inhale the vapors. This is very soothing.
