Chamomile Colic Home Remedy

Chamomile tea is an excellent home remedy for colic.  Chamomile has both sedative and antispasmodic properties which are said to provide relief from cramping in the intestines and bring about relaxation as well.  It is true that chamomile has nineteen antispasmodic compounds and also five sedative compounds.  Put a teaspoon of chamomile flowers in a cup that has been filled with boiling hot water.  Cover the cup and let it steep for 10 minutes.  Pour the tea through a strainer and when it has cooled to slightly warm or room temperature, give it to your baby in a bottle.  If you are a nursing mother, you may also drink the tea unless you have any allergies with pollen.  You can substitute packaged chamomile tea bags if you do not have the flowers.

Avoid Dairy

We are all too familiar with the age old carton of cow’s milk.  It seems so innocent.  However, it can be the cause of colic in a large percentage of babies.  Cow’s milk is not naturally suited for humans.  Cow’s milk is for cows and is intended to grow a calf to 400 pounds in a year. The problem is the protein in the cow’s milk.  Try removing dairy products from your baby’s diet and also stop consuming dairy products if you are breast feeding.  Try almond milk, soy milk or rice milk.  Cow’s milk is also responsible for many other ailments in infants and children including auto-immune disease which can manifest in many ways including childhood diabetes.

Peppermint

Water with peppermint is a centuries old home remedy for colic.  Researchers have found that the effective ingredient in peppermint oil is a calcium channel blocking agent.  This can ease distress in the intestines which is commonly associated with colic.  You can soak a stick of peppermint in water as an alternative.  Do not use pure peppermint oil to make a tea as this will be too potent for your baby.

Basil Colic Home Remedy

Basil or holy basil, also known as Tulsi, has an abundance of eugonol which acts as a sedative and an antispasmodic.  Put a teaspoon of dried or fresh basil leaves in a cup that has been filled with boiling water.  Cover this cup and let it steep for about 10 minutes.  Strain the tea and give it to your baby in a bottle while it is a little warm or at room temperature.

My home remedy for colic is to give my baby a couple of teaspoons of chamomile tea along with whatever else is in their bottle.  This worked well for both of my children when they were infants and it makes an immediate difference.  I hesitated to do this at first but my mother was quite insistent and it really did work well.

On your baby’s belly, rub a little cooking oil that you have warmed in the microwave.  Do let it get too hot.  This always did the trick for my kids.

For colic, heat up a little olive oil and, in a circular motion, rub it on your baby’s tummy.

Peel the flaky layer of an onion and throw it away.  Then peal off the next fresh layer and cut this up into small pieces.  Put this in a pan filled with about 3 cups of water and bring it to a boil and then simmer for about 5 minutes.  Put a teaspoon of the onion water in your baby’s bottle and it will aid in relief from gas.

Hey y’all, this was suggested to me by my mother-in-law.  At first I knew she was nuts but it really has worked wonders!  Heat up a cup of water and let a peppermint stick dissolve in it.  When feeding, let your baby nurse on one side and then give him about an ounce of the peppermint water from a bottle and let him switch to nursing on the other side.  He will relieve the gas and he tends to sleep for several hours.

For colic give catnip, hops, fennel or peppermint tea.
