Dry Eyes Home Remedies & Natural Treatments

 

Fatty Acids

Having dry eyes means you are not getting enough essential fatty acids in your diet. Here is a home remedy for dry eyes: take one primrose oil gel capsule or black current seed oil gel capsule 3 times a day with your meals. It is important to take these capsules with meals so that the food can absorb the capsule. These capsules are high in GLA which can be harder for a person to produce when they get older. Black currant seed oil has the highest amounts of GLA of the two. You also want to be taking DHA/EPA fish oil with this to balance out your omega. It will take about a week or longer to see results.

Hot Washcloth

A dry eye natural remedy that you can do is to wet a washcloth with warm water, making sure it’s not hot water, and put the cloth over your eyes to relieve your dry eyes. Make sure that when you put the washcloth over your eyes that they are shut so it covers your eyelids. Then use your finger tip to give a gentle message to your eyes with the washcloth still on your eyelids. This will provide immediate relief for dry eyes. To prevent dry eyes from happening you should make changes in your diet that will help you get the right amount of vitamins and minerals to assist with tear production and dryness of the eyes. You can also nutritional supplements to get your daily amounts of vitamins and minerals.

Contact Lens Care

If you wear contact lenses, you need to figure out if they could be causing your dry eyes. Take out the contacts and wear your glasses for the rest of the day. If this gives you relief then you know it is your contact lenses. In this case you should make it a habit to avoid wearing your contacts for 1 to 2 days a week and that will give your eyes a break from the lenses which will help relieve your dry eyes.

A great home remedy for dry eyes is using a humidifier to moisten the air in your home. This will help you during times when there is warm/dry weather because the humidifier will counteract the dry air in your house.

Warm Compress

A natural remedy for dry eyes is to apply a warm compress over your eyes. When applying the compress you should make sure that the compress is clean and damp with warm water, not hot. You should apply the compress for 5 to 10 minutes, two or three times a day.

Sun Glasses

A good natural remedy for dry eyes is to wear sunglasses when you go out during parts of the year when the weather is really dry, like the middle of summer or winter. The sun glasses will help protect your eyes against the dry air.

Artificial Tears

Using artificial tears (that you can get over the counter at the store) is a great home remedy for dry eyes. You should use these several times in a day to relieve your dry eyes. Only use the artificial tears that are preservative free or non-preserved. Make sure to carry the artificial tears with you at all times. That way you can use them whenever they are needed. Don’t use medical eye drops for red eyes because they are not formulated to help dry eyes.

A home remedy for people who wake up with dry eyes is to use an over the counter tear replacement ointment before going to bed at night. This will keep your eyes from dying out during the night while you sleep.

A simple home remedy for dry eyes is to make sure the vents in cars are not pointed at your face when you are using the a/c or the heater in your car. Also avoid pointing hair dryers at your face and remember to use artificial tears before starting to dry your hair. Fans can also contribute to dry eyes. Avoid using them if you can, but otherwise use them at their lowest setting.

A dry eye remedy for book readers and computer people is to take a break. If you get dry eyes while you’re reading a book or on the computer, you should take frequent beaks from your task and look away. While you are looking away, blink your eyes so that the tears in your eyes get spread around.
