Head Lice Home Remedies & Natural Remedies

Combing

The most organic simple home remedy for head lice removal is a method that is time consuming yet will work every time. There are no chemicals involved just taking the time to comb out the nits with a lice comb and tweezers. You may have to spend hours doing this for several days but it works.

Olive Oil

Using oil or oil based products such as mayonnaise to kill lice is a natural remedy for removing head lice. The oil does not allow the lice to breathe to it asphyxiates them. Olive oil is wonderful because it coats the lice and kills them. You will have to leave the oil on the hair for an hour. After washing the hair thoroughly you will have to comb out the dead lice and eggs.

Tea Tree Oil Home Remedy for Head Lice

Tea tree oil is a potent home remedy for head lice. My good friend used tea tree oil when her child came home with head lice. This natural remedy was so effective because tea tree oil contains something called terpenoids which has properties that are antifungal and antiseptic. One of the main properties in terpenoid also has natural insecticidal power which works killing the head lice because it attacks the lice’s nervous system. My friend coated her child’s scalp and hair in tea tree oil mixture. Tea tree oil has a rather strong odor so you might use a plastic bath cap after you apply the oil. Also some people have allergic reactions to tea tree oil so you might want to test the oil on your arm before you cover your scalp in it. Also if you are pregnant or using tea tree oil on a young child I would first check with a doctor because tea tree oil can be toxic in certain circumstances with children and pregnant women.  My recipe for tea tree oil lice removal mixture is take 5 drops of tea tree oil and mix into 100 ml of vegetable oil.  Let the oil sit for approximately two hours before shampooing clean. Make sure you cover every piece of hair and scalp to ensure that the lice will be killed. After the 2 hours shampoo your hair, you may have to shampoo twice and then use the lice comb to remove the dead lice. You can also purchase a tea tree oil shampoo to wash your hair with.

Using natural remedies for head lice have wonderful benefits that commercial products do not offer. One such benefit is that using natural oils, lemon juice, vinegar and other natural ingredients can actually help prevent a reoccurrence of head lice infestation whereas the chemical products sold commercially cannot offer preventive protection. I highly recommend using oils and other natural ingredients to kill head lice and as a home remedy for preventing head lice in the future.

Baby Oil Gel

My baby contracted head lice from me and so I decided to research natural home remedies for head lice so I could safely remove the lice from his hair without exposing him to any harsh chemicals. I used mayonnaise on my own hair yet on my infant’s hair I decided to use a baby oil gel. I applied this baby oil gel all over my son’s head and left it on a short while. It was gentle on his scalp and I was able to easily remove the lice and nits from his head.

My child contracted head lice from friends and then I ended up with them too. My home remedy for my son was an over the counter shampoo, but for me I used a hot iron and burned the lice and nits out. This worked.

Prell Shampoo & Vinegar

Growing up around farm animals I was exposed to mites and lice. A natural remedy for removing head lice that I found to work super well was shampooing my hair with Prell shampoo and then rinsing my hair in apple cider vinegar. I allowed the apple cider vinegar to remain on my hair and scalp for a good half hour to an hour before washing it out. This really worked.

I found out I had a horrible lice infestation in my hair while I was pregnant. I had not had lice since I was a child and was very shocked and upset. I did not want to use any lice shampoo that contained chemicals so I found a home remedy for head lice that worked perfectly. I bought some vegetable oil at the grocery store and saturated my hair in the oil and then wrapped my hair in a plastic bag and I left the oil on 12 hours. You have to leave the oil on at least 12 hours if not 24 hours because lice can live without breathing for up to 8 full hours. I was able to get rid of the lice using oil but I also had to comb them out afterward and have a friend pick out the nits.

Denorex Shampoo

Lice infestations are awful and can last weeks if you do not take care of them the right way. My natural home remedy for head lice is a multi step process. Usually by the time you have discovered lice on your family member’s head there are numerous lice waiting to hatch in the coming days. The reason that the over the counter products do not work always is they do not kill the eggs waiting to hatch.  Lice and lice eggs are killed if exposed to heat above 58 degrees so my suggestion is to first treat your hair with Denorex Shampoo. Leave the shampoo on your head for at least five minutes before rinsing. Use this shampoo daily. Also if you need to use mayonnaise or oil treatments and leave the mayonnaise or oil on your hair for a couple hours before shampooing out. Wash all linens and clothing in hot water then dry in dryer for at least 20 minutes.

Clean Hair

My children and I have never had to deal with lice because of sage advice given to me from my grandmother. My grandmother told me that the most natural home remedy for head lice prevention is to keep your hair clean. She said that lice to not discriminate on who they choose to attack, but they are much less likely to infest a clean head of hair. Either we have all been extremely lucky or my grandmother’s advice worked!! Wash your hair daily to avoid head lice!

Quit Nits

Kids can pick up head lice through their clothing mixing with other’s children’s clothing at school. Our home remedy for avoiding head lice is an over the counter product called Quit Nits. This product is sprayed on clean hair and outer clothing before school. This will help prevent your child from ever contracting head lice to begin with.

Lavender Oil for Head Lice Prevention

Head lice do not like lavender essential oil. One natural home remedy for preventing head lice is to place a couple drops of lavender essential oil behind your ears and at the base of your neck.

It usually takes 7 to 8 full days to remove lice from your family’s head and home because they have a birth cycle. The lice cannot live for more than 24 hours off their host so if you clean your hair with Denorex shampoo daily, use oil or vinegar natural remedy for head lice treatments and also wash and dry all clothing, pillow cases, stuffed animals in hot water and a hot dryer you will take care of the problem.

My home remedy for head lice is Listerine as a hair rinse. Listerine is too harsh for a child’s head, but it worked wonders on mine. I washed my hair and then poured Listerine over my hair and this ended up killing all the lice on my head.

My children came home with head lice. I went to my doctor and he suggested the over the counter shampoo and treatment. I used that and then washed all their belongings in hot water and dried them twice. I then place sheets over the couch to suffocate the lice. I used the over the counter treatment all week and kept finding live lice. I decided to research natural home remedies for head lice and found that many people were getting great results with using Denorex shampoo so I ventured out to the store for a few bottles of this shampoo. I have to say that it worked. If Denorex had not worked I was going to try Listerine. Head lice are very difficult to kill unless you use the right products. I would much rather use Denorex than the chemicals prescribed by the doctor.

Listerine Hair Rinse

I was a babysitter for some children who ended up with a bad case of head lice. Since I have such long thick hair I was hoping I would not get infected but I did. I could not get rid of the lice for months. I tried everything, RID, NEX, flea shampoo, alcohol, you name it. I even bleached my hair and this did not work. Then my mother came home with some Listerine. Her friend had suggested we try it. My mom helped me pour it over my hair while I was standing over the sink. Her friend told her that Listerine is the best home remedy for head lice. She told her to have me pour the Listerine over my hair while my hair was dry. Well, this worked. I strongly suggest using Listerine if you have a head lice problem.

Limes and Dill Seed

I had read up on home remedies or natural remedies for treating head lice. I found one in particular that ended up working out for us. This person had posted a recipe for a mixture to put on your head to kill head lice so we tried it. You take four limes and cut them in halves, then take some dill seed and grind them up to make a paste. Take the limes and add enough water to a sauce pan to boil the limes. After the water comes to a boil add the limes and boil for a few minutes then take off burner and add the dill seed. Mix together and them take the limes and rub the lime on your scalp all over Allow this liquid and seed mixture to sit on your hair for at least a half hour before rinsing out. You will need to comb the dead lice and eggs out of your hair and this can take quite a long time.

I had been battling head lice for months and finally discovered a solution that worked for me. This natural home remedy for head lice is easy and effective. Buy some Head and Shoulders shampoo and wash your hair thoroughly, then take a bottle of Listerine and rinse your hair in the Listerine. Let the Listerine soak into your hair for at least a half hour; after your hair dries take fish oil and coat your entire scalp and hair in the fish oil and let sit there for an hour, then comb through your hair and shampoo with Tgel. After I rinse out the shampoo I apply Suave Coconut conditioner and let sit on my hair for 15 minutes. Before you rinse the conditioner out comb through your hair to make certain all the lice are dead. Once rinsed out you should be clean and free of all head lice. Wash all bedding and vacuum all furniture including mattresses.
