Mucus Natural Home Remedies

Marshmallow Root

Try this easy natural remedy to cure mucus accumulation.  Take two marshmallow root capsules every day with each meal.  Continue with this dosage until the mucus starts to clear.  Once you start to feel some relief, continue taking the marshmallow root, but follow the dosage on the bottle.

Pleurisy Root

Make a tincture with pleurisy root.  Fill a dropper and take it twice a day until congestion is gone.

Chamomile Tea

Try this simple and effective home remedy when you're struck with an awful case of mucus and chest congestion.  This is also a great way to treat mucus for your children.  Brew some chamomile tea for about three and a half minutes.  Then, add a little bit of soy milk and honey to it (cow’s milk creates mucus).  This is great and my kids love it.

Coltsfoot Tea and Mullein Vapors

Coltsfoot tea or mullein vapors are wonderful natural remedies to open the sinuses.  This is great when you're trying to clear the sinuses of mucus.

Yarrow

Mucus doesn't always occur in the upper respiratory system.  You can also have mucus in the bladder that can lead to an infection.  To treat this, take yarrow.

Eucalyptus and Peppermint Vapors

One of the best natural remedies to get rid of sinus congestion and phlegm is to inhale peppermint vapor or eucalyptus oil vapors.

Cayenne Extract and Garlic Oil

You can break up chest mucus with garlic oil or cayenne extract that's applied directly to the chest.

Chickweed Tea and Licorice Tea

If your mucus is accumulating in the respiratory tract, you'll really benefit from drinking licorice tea or chickweed tea.  This is a great home remedy to relieve mucus.

St. John's Wort

Phlegm that is gathering in the urinary tract and bowels can be easily treated with the natural remedy of St. John's wort.  Follow the dosage on the bottle and you'll soon be relieved.

Juniper Berry Capsules

If you are prone to mucus (especially around allergy season), try taking juniper berries in capsule form.  This is a great natural preventative measure.

Fruits and Vegetables

Excessive phlegm can be eliminated with lots of fruits and vegetables.  Try garlic, celery, cauliflower, onions, asparagus, lemon, grapefruit, oranges and pineapples.

Garlic

Garlic is a wonderful natural remedy for mucus.  If you can't eat just plain, raw garlic, you can add it to your favorite recipes (or add more than the recipe calls for).  Be sure that you are using fresh garlic; not the pre-minced kind that comes in a jar.  If you don't have any recipes that you can add fresh garlic to (or if you prefer to eat it alone), you can try mixing it with honey.  The honey helps to soothe sore throats that are irritated from the phlegm and the garlic will help to get rid of the excess.

Homemade Expectorant

Make your own homemade expectorant.  Finely chop six medium sized onions and put them into the top part of a double boiler.  Add a half of a cup of honey.  Fill up the bottom compartment with water.  Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for about two hours.  Once the time has lapsed, strain the mixture from a sieve into a glass jar that has a tight lid.  You should store your homemade concoction in a dark place that isn't warm.  Be sure that you take one tablespoon every two to three hours.  This is a wonderful natural remedy for mucus that has worked very well for my family.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Ginger Juice

Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with one teaspoon of ginger juice.  This should be mixed with hot water and drunk like a homemade tea.  Whenever I have a large amount of mucus, I will drink this home remedy a few times a day and add menthol inhalation.
