Acupressure

Here are some good nervousness acupressure points to rub and press firmly that come to us from Chinese acupuncture.  Triple Warmer 15 (Heavenly Rejuvenation)- Midway on the top between the outside of the shoulders and the base of the neck then 1/2 inch down toward the back. Bladder 10 (Heavenly Pillar) - below the base of the skull one finger width on the ropey muscles and 1/2 inch out from the spine. Pericardium 6 (Inner Gate) - in the middle of the palm side of the forearm 2 1/2 finger widths from the crease of the wrist moving toward the elbow.  You can buy a wrist band with metal knobs that push in on this point when worn.  They are sold as a nausea and motion sickness remedy on line but the point works just as well for nervousness.

Breathing Exercise

Stand erect with your feet a comfortable distance apart and your arms hanging at your sides. Raise your arms with palms up while inhaling. Bring your arms straight out to the sides and then up above your head where you will interlock your fingers with palms facing the top of your head. Now turn your palms so they face up. Push up with your arms and palms toward the sky as you finish inhaling. Get a good stretch. Now reverse the movement of your arms as you exhale until your arms rest at your sides lowering your chin until it rests on your chest. This exercise appears both in yoga and Chi gong and is very good for its call meeting effect and is one of the best home remedies for nervousness. Repeat this five times.

Nutmeg Remedy

In a cup of orange juice, mix a teaspoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of honey.  Drink this as needed to restore calm.

Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine understands nervousness and anxiety as a problem most often originating with the heart. Insomnia also often accompanies this condition. These problems are caused by constrained or bottled emotion in the chest. Having experienced a loss, the memory of a loss, repressed expression and other similar traumatic events cause a trapping of energy in the chest. Relief can be gotten by physically releasing the Qi in the chest which, in turn, will release the pent up energy. Push-ups work just as well as Prozac. Acupuncture also works well. Other methods for getting a release in the chest include breathing exercises, boxing, yoga techniques, chest massage, forceful wailing and crying and most any exercise that involves the upper body. Chinese herbs treat anxiety by moving the liver Qi which is the Qi of the chest. One of the best herbs for this is Hare’s Ear Root (chai hu, Bupleurum) which is significantly enhanced when taken with a small amount of mint (ho he). There is a famous 900 year old formula for this condition called Xiao Yao Wan or rambling powder. It relieves trapped energy and encourages the free flow of Qi in the chest.

Herbs

Make a tea of one or more of the following as a natural home remedy for nervousness:  Peach leaf, hops, spearmint, catnip, peppermint, chamomile and horsetail.  All of these are good.

Meditation

Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly with your spine erect.  Watch your breath going in and out and try to get the mind to stay with the breath.  At first this will be difficult because the mind is like an unruly child that has never been taught any manners.  Don’t be upset when the mind wanders off.  Be patient and bring your attention back to the breath.  You will eventually begin to experience a peace that is very satisfying.  Then meditating will become easier.  This is one of the best natural remedies for nervousness.

Eat Carbohydrates

Eat a lot of carbohydrates (best if whole grain and whole food) such as pasta, bread and tortillas.  These are known as comfort foods for their ability to create a lot of serotonin in the brain.  This has a peaceful calming effect.  Serotonin also helps your brain to regulate sleep. Foods high in B vitamins are also helpful.  These include whole grains, bell peppers, and corn.  By the way, carbohydrates (whole food) do not cause weight gain.  It is fat and oil that makes one fat.
