Chlamydia Causes and Symptoms

Chlamydia is a prevalent sexually transmitted disease and is the result of a bacterial infection. Chlamydia is passed from one person to another by sexual intercourse or other sexual contact.  Women and men can get this disease.  Chlamydia normally will not have any symptoms.  If there are symptoms, one might experience a burning sensation when urinating or there can be an unusual discharge from the penis or vagina.

Chlamydia can infect the urinary tract of both women and men.  When this occurs in women, it can infect the reproductive organs and this can result in pelvic inflammatory disease.  This can cause serious problems with pregnancy and can cause infertility.  Babies that are born to mothers infected with Chlamydia can have pneumonia and eye infections.  In men the epididymis or tube that transports sperm can become infected.  This can result in pain and fever and, in rare cases, loss of fertility.

The traditional cure for Chlamydia is antibiotics.  Condoms can significantly reduce the chance of contracting the disease.  It is recommended by medical experts that sexually active women under the age of 25 be tested for Chlamydia once each year.
