Too Many Drugs Given Too Readily

In George Orwell’s book 1984, the populace was high on mood-elevating drugs.  That is what we are seeing today.  $12 billion dollars is spent annually worldwide on these drugs.  Those of us who were born before 1965 can remember when no one we knew was taking these drugs.  Life was hard then too.  There was the great depression and world war II.  The simple reason for this epidemic of depression and mood-altering drugs is poor diet and insufficient exercise. The line between the mind and the body is not distinct.  In eastern medicine the mind and body are looked upon as two aspects of one thing.  Sucking profits from the suffering of the miserable masses, the drug companies are making drugs for numbing us but ignore the underlying cause.

Wake Therapy

Wake therapy as a natural home remedy for depression was discovered about 35 years ago.  It is the most powerful remedy you will find anywhere.  It has been found in clinical studies that “wake therapy” produces a fast and profound improvement in mood in approximately 60 percent of all depressed patients.  It does not matter what type of depression or the cause – the results are the same.  Within a few hours of staying awake, suicidal, psychotic and deeply depressed persons are transformed into their regular, normal selves after a few hours of staying awake.  The study showed this effect equally for men and women. The effectiveness of this therapy was not affected by the severity of the depression, previous hospitalizations or age.  Patients with premenstrual depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as well as the standard case of the “blues” all responded.  Wake therapy even works dramatically for persons who believe lack of sleep is at the root of their depression.  Persons with large daily variations in mood had the best responses.

St. John's Wort

One of the best natural remedies for depression is St. John’s Wort.  There have been over twenty major clinical studies of this herb in the treatment of depression.  It has been prescribed in folk remedies for poor sleep, nervousness, worry and sadness.  There is lots of information on the web about the studies that have been done.  In Germany, St. John’s Wort is commonly prescribed for mild depression and it has no side effects.  This herb is not effective on severe depression.  St. John's Wort is not advised for nursing or pregnant women people with bipolar disorder, children or kidney or liver disease. Allergies as Depression Natural Remedy

For many persons, their depression has a direct correlation with their allergies.  Research has demonstrated that allergies can be a cause of depression.  In one study, seventy percent of persons suffering with depression had allergies.  Jurriaan Plesman, Clinical Nutritionist with the Hypoglaecimic Association of Australia, states that many persons with allergies become allergic to more and more foods as time passes.  He gives us a look at the more common allergy causing foods as per scientific studies:

Cow’s Milk 56-67%
Wheat 43-57%
Chocolate 26-55%
Eggs 22-60%
Orange 13-52%
Benzoic acid 35%
Cheese 32%
Tomatoes 14-32%

You can find which foods are causing your depression by doing an elimination diet.  For starters, eliminate all the foods in the list shown here.  Do this for 10 days and at the end of that time, see if your depression has improved or gone away.  If it has not improved eliminate other foods.  The most common offenders are dairy products (all of them) and gluten which is found in wheat and several other grains.  Gluten is a protein.  Meat should also be eliminated in the initial phase.  If your depression goes away, then start adding these foods one at a time to find the offender(s).  This is one of the most effective depression natural remedies

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Clinical studies have shown a strong link between depression and insufficient intake of omega-3 fatty acids.  This is needed for proper brain function (and for many other things as well) and our bodies do not manufacture it.  We have to get it in the food we eat.  Cultures that eat a lot of fish have an incidence of depression that is ten times less than in the USA.  You can get omega-3s from cold water fish but these are increasingly contaminated with mercury, PCBs and other harmful toxins.  The best source is from plant foods such as flax seed.  You can purchase flax seed oil which is an excellent source of this fatty acid.  Avoid omega-6 oils as some studies have linked these fats with increased incidence of depression and other ills such as inflammation. Oils high in omega-6 fatty acids include sunflower, cottonseed, corn and safflower oil.
