Diet for Osteoarthritis

A great way to improve your osteoarthritis is by changing parts of your life style, one part being diet. Most people believe that animal proteins such as diary, eggs and meats can help you with issues such as osteoarthritis, but in fact they don’t.  When you think they are helping they really are not, instead they just add fat and weight to the body causing your osteoarthritis to get worse. The standard American diet causes damage to the joints in several ways. Over two thirds of persons on this high-calorie, high-fat diet are overweight and nearly 1/3 can be classified as obese. This excess weight causes damage to the joints involved with the hips, legs and feet. However there are other reasons why a bad diet causes injury to joints. 1. The Western diet is often low on or missing essential nutrients so the joints and bones do not receive the raw materials they need to be strong and wear resistant.  2. Our high-fat diet allows an excess of fat to be present in the bloodstream which causes blood cells to clump, reducing the efficiency of circulation which, in turn, deprives joints of nourishment.  3. The most damaging result of the standard American diet is the consumption of dairy products and animal proteins which cause inflammation and destruction of the joints.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2004 Apr;79(4):544-51) demonstrated the health benefits of a better diet and weight loss. 316 older persons who were overweight or obese and living a sedentary lifestyle and who exhibited x-ray evidence of osteoarthritis of the knee participated in the study. Those persons who had weight loss due to a better diet showed a decrease in inflammation. No fewer than 25 studies have demonstrated the benefits of a plant-based, low-fat, diet for inflammatory arthritis. The bulk of this clinical research was performed with people who were told they have rheumatoid arthritis which is characterized by severe inflammation. In truth, all forms of arthritis exhibit elements of both destruction and inflammation.

Auto-immune disease is where our own body’s immune system attacks our own cells.  In some people the attack is on the joints causing arthritis.  In other people, they get lupus, or irritable bowel syndrome, or multiple schlerosis or eczema or type 1 diabetes.  There are many forms in which auto-immune disease can manifest.   It depends on the person as to where the disease is going to pop out.  The most common cause of auto-immune disease is dairy products. Dairy is the NUMBER ONE allergen.  This means that more people are allergic to milk than any other food.  What milk products do in some people is cause the lining of the small intestine to get small holes in it – due to the allergic reaction.  When this occurs, the intestine will allow undigested animal proteins into the blood stream.  The body’s immune system sees them as foreign and makes antibodies to mop them up.  However, these invading proteins are very similar to our own body proteins and before long, our immune system turns these same anti-bodies onto our own tissues.  Then our killer cells see the anti-body flag and attack our own body.

If your joints start to ach you apply a hot item such as a hot water bottle on the affected area for twenty minutes. After it has been twenty minutes remove the hot water bottle and sit for ten minutes, then ice it for fifteen minutes. This is one simple way of stopping your joints from hurting. Never use a heating pad or heating blanket.  The alternating current in these devices will make your Qi chaotic.  They are not healthy.
