Fluid Retention Natural Treatments & Home Remedies

Elevating your legs will help tremendously.  This simple natural treatment for fluid retention in the legs is very effective.  Exercising the calf muscles will help to get the blood pumping and will remove the fluid from the ankles.  Be sure that you're doing lots of cardio exercise as well (aerobic dancing, bicycling, running and walking are all great).  If you have a sedentary desk job, try to raise your legs parallel to the floor if you begin to notice any swelling in your legs or ankles.  Take regular breaks throughout your work day and get up and walk around the office.  It's also a good idea to do some mild exercising on your feet while on your lunch break.

Gravity can really help reduce swelling in the legs.  While you're at home relaxing, simply prop your feet up on a pillow.

Do not sit cross legged.  A very simple and effective natural treatment for fluid retention in the legs is simply to change the way you sit.  By sitting cross legged, you are limiting the amount of blood that can reach the thigh veins, and this can greatly increase the amount of swelling in the legs.

Avoid wearing tight clothes.  Squeezing yourself into clothes that are too small and too tight (espeically pants) only increases the pressure that is placed on your legs and limits the fluid that can be removed from the lower legs.

While you shouldn't smoke due to a myriad of health problems caused by cigarettes, smoking is also harmful for fluid retention.  The best natural treatment for fluid retention is to quit smoking.  Not only will quitting smoking help with fluid retention, but it will also drastically improve your overall health and quality of life.

Parsley is a wonderful natural diuretic that is very effective at treating water retention in the body.  To benefit from parsley, you can make your own tea.  For every cup of boiling water, add two teaspoons of dried parsley.  Steep the parsley for about ten minutes.  Drink three cups of this tea daily and you'll notice a significant improvement in water retention.

One of the most effective natural treatments for fluid retention is dandelion.  It is a very good natural diuretic.  You don't have to stop taking dandelion at any point in time, as it is safe for long term use.  Dandelion has many wonderful effects, such as easing menopausal change, increasing the digestibility of food, nourishing the kidneys and removing excess fluid from cells.

A great natural remedy for fluid retention is dong quai. Dong quai really helps to relieve bloating and has a natural diuretic effect.  It also is thought to restrict the grown of many bacteria.

You might be surprised to find that foods that you're likely already eating regularly are a very effective fluid retention treatment.  Try to increase your consumption of watermelon, cucumber, grapes, corn (and corn silk tea) and asparagus.  Coffee, black tea and parsley are also great natural diuretics, but should be used in limited amounts.

You may want to try some essential oils as a treatment for fluid retention.  Try rosemary, lavender, juniper, geranium and cypress.  These oils can be used in several ways like massage, compresses, mouthwashes, vaporizers, baths and simple inhalation.
